The Main space

large open photo studio in paterson new jersey

Our 3,000 square foot main space lit up by the sun in the afternoon.

The Fold’s main space is a bright, flexible studio designed to give photographers room to create. At roughly 3,000 square feet with soaring 14-foot ceilings, it has the scale to accommodate full lighting setups, large props, and multiple shooting stations without feeling cramped. One wall is lined with four giant factory windows, each measuring 11 by 9 feet, bringing in an abundance of natural light that shifts beautifully throughout the day. The hardwood floors and exposed brick add texture and warmth for environmental portraits or lifestyle work, while clean white walls offer a seamless backdrop for more controlled setups.

Because of its open layout, the space adapts easily to a wide range of shoots including running a high-volume portrait day or capturing a mix of natural light and strobe. The height makes it easy to hang seamless background rolls or shape light without restrictions. Power access is plentiful, and the uncluttered floor plan lets you move freely between angles without having to constantly reset gear. For photographers who need both character and versatility, the main space offers a clean, professional canvas that’s ready to make your lighting and creative direction shine.

The Gallery hallway

Our gallery hallway is the perfect contrast to the open main space without having to change locations.

Our gallery hallway is a long, sconce-lit corridor that connects to the main space, offering an entirely different visual mood without leaving the building. Its clean lines and controlled lighting make it a natural choice for dramatic portraits, fashion editorials, or product features that benefit from a more intimate, focused setting. The walls can be left minimal for a sleek, modern feel or used as a display space for prints, props, or client branding during a shoot.

Photographers often use the hallway for capturing a contrasting look without needing a full location change. Its enclosed feel allows for precise control over artificial lighting, from soft, even fills to bold, directional shadows.

The Kitchen

The kitchen features a large counter open on both. It allows you unlimited range for lights and camera placement.

The kitchen is a 400-square-foot, open-concept space built with both function and aesthetics in mind; perfect for food photography, chef portraits, and culinary content creation. A 14-foot counter runs the length of the room, offering plenty of surface area for plating, prep shots, and overhead flat lays. Natural light fills the space, complemented by clean lines and neutral finishes that won’t distract from your subject. Full-sized appliances and ample counter space make it easy to stage step-by-step cooking sequences or capture behind-the-scenes action without interrupting workflow.

For chef portraits or brand storytelling, the kitchen provides a polished yet approachable backdrop. You can shoot a chef at work, transition seamlessly to styled dish shots, and even set up a seated tasting scene at the 12-seat chef’s table, all within the same space. The layout supports multiple camera angles, from tight macro detail to wide lifestyle frames, and the consistent lighting conditions help maintain a cohesive look across an entire series.

Private rooms

Our private rooms are often used for gear storage, make-up and wardrobe changes.

Our private rooms offer dedicated, enclosed spaces that give photographers and their teams the flexibility to work without distraction. These rooms are ideal for hair and makeup prep, wardrobe changes, or as a quiet holding area for talent between setups. Having them just steps from the main shooting space means you can keep your production running smoothly without disrupting the day's workflow.

For photographers running high-volume sessions, the private rooms make it easy to stage clients before their slot or manage multiple looks in a single shoot. They’re also useful as gear storage areas, keeping cases and equipment out of sight so the main space stays clean and clutter-free for shooting. With privacy, comfort, and convenience built in, these rooms help maintain a professional, organized environment that makes your time at The Fold more efficient and stress-free.

Perfect for portrait sessions and marathons

Clients can check in or wait comfortably in the gallery hallway or private rooms, hair and makeup can be done on-site, and gear storage stays out of the way. With everything in one place, versatile backdrops, easy load-in, and separate prep areas, you can deliver a smooth, professional experience no matter how many people, or pets you’re photographing in a day.
